Position Title:  School Security Officer (2 positons - 1 contracted, 1 interim)

Department:    Security

Reports To:      Building Level Principal

Contract:         2016-17 School Year (180 days)

SUMMARY: The security officer is a resource for safety and security issues. They will assist school administration in maintaining a safe and secure environment. The security officer will provide a highly visible presence to deter or identify trespassers on campus. Security officers will use their training, knowledge, and experience to help the school administrators in handling situations involving possible weapons or in the identification of controlled dangerous substances. School security officers will have contact with the majority of students in school. They will serve as a resource for educators in sharing their experience and expertise when they are invited into the classroom. The security officer will work to educate students in drug and crime prevention and personal safety. The security officer will also assist in crisis planning and training to the faculty and staff.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Protect the lives and property of students, parents and school personnel and assist in the maintenance of order in the school.
  2. Work to prevent juvenile delinquency through close contact with students and other school personnel.
  3. Assist school officials with their efforts to enforce Board of Education policies and procedures.
  4. Assist school officials in emergency crisis planning and building security matters.
  5. Provide training for school personnel in handling crisis situations which may arise at the school.
  6. Work with guidance counselors and other student support staff to assist students and to provide services to students involved in situations where referrals to service agencies are necessary.
  7. Counsel students in special situations, such as students suspected of engaging in criminal misconduct, when requested by the principal or designee or by the parents of the students.
  8. Keep documentation of all office counseling sessions and also maintain record of criminal incidents or other serious incidents involving students or the school.
  9. Formulate educational crime prevention programs to reduce the opportunity for crimes against persons and property in the school.
  10. Formulate drug abuse prevention education and provide presentations at the request of teachers and administrators.
  11. Provide security for extra-curricular events or functions, such as athletic events, concerts, and dances, at the request of the Principal or the Security Coordinator.
  12. Provide traffic control during the arrival and departure of students.
  13. Promote professionalism and be a positive role model.

 

 

EDUCATION/LICENSURE/EXPERIENCE:  High School Diploma, GED or equivalent. Previous experience in security required. Law Enforcement experience preferred.  Additional school resource officer training may be required.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of pre-employment background checks. Appropriate personal and professional conduct at all times around students, other staff members and the general public.
