Position Title:   Vocal Music Teacher - Middle School

SUMMARY: The vocal music teacher is responsible for providing a comprehensive music education/performance program for secondary students in grades 6-12 and develops in each student an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture. Teaches techniques of vocal and instrumental music expression, discovers and develops talents of students in the field of music and performs other duties directly related to this position description.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teaches skills in instrumental and/or vocal music; teaches listening theory and supportive courses relating to the nature, structure and meaning of music; helps students develop discriminatory judgments about music.
  • Provides a balanced music program and organizes class schedules/class time so that instruction, preparation and rehearsals can be accomplished within the allotted periods.
  • Provides necessary individual and small group instruction in order to individualize the music program/curriculum to the needs of each student.
  • Utilizes repertoire of all available types of music literature including classical, traditional and contemporary utilizing tapes, discs and live performance.
  • Provides broad spectrum of music experience that is appropriate to the age and skill level of students.
  • Evaluates each pupil’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.
  • Plans, rehearses and directs students in musical presentations for school and community.
  • Organizes and implements vocal music trips in accordance with District policy and regulations as well as student interest and ability. Arranges transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
  • Complies with federal and state laws and District policies.
  • Supports vocal music booster club activities.
  • Plans, rehearses, and directs musical experiences for the school and community.
  • Cooperates with the school administration in providing music programs for school productions and, as appropriate, civic functions that enhance students’ performing experience.
  • Prepares students and required documents for District and state auditions and competitions. Makes all arrangements.
  • Oversees scheduling and other arrangements for the rehearsals and concerts in cooperation with the building principal.
  • Maintains an accurate inventory of equipment, robes, etc. Controls the storage and use of school-owned equipment and materials; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
  • Submits budget needs annually to the principal in accordance with established timelines and guidelines.
  • Orders all supplies and materials necessary for music-related activities in accordance with established District procedures and budget allocations.
  • Develops and implements plans for music programs and shows written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Prepares lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
  • Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Supervise students in and out-of-classroom during the school day.
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  • Maintain professional competence through professional learning activities provided by the District, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator in the evaluation process.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/LICENSURE/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree required; field of study correlated to teaching assignment as a vocal music teacher with one of the appropriate vocal music licensure code numbers for the appropriate grade level 204, 265, 266 or equivalent. Teachers with experience are valued; however, no prior experience is required.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of pre-employment background checks. Appropriate personal and professional conduct at all times around students, other staff members and the general public.
