SUMMARY: The Technology Support Specialist responds to support tickets in accordance with department policies, provides excellent customer service, troubleshoots technical problems involving operating systems, hardware, software, peripherals, and other classroom technologies; addresses user requests for equipment maintenance and enhancement; installs, re-installs and upgrades operating systems, software applications and computer equipment and network components, including peripherals, and acts as a resource for users regarding technology.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Loads software packages, including but not limited to, operating systems, word processing packages, applications, spreadsheet programs, instructional packages, network management and diagnostic software, into stand-alone computers, servers and individual networked machines.
  • Installs and repairs hardware and peripheral components such as monitors, keyboards, printers, network cards, CD-ROMS and disk drives; install and repair workstation and server-based peripherals, including but not limited to, disk arrays, firewalls, etc.
  • Assists in the installation, upgrade, and configuration of network printing, directory structures, rights, security, firewalls, messaging systems, internet and web applications and other software on file servers.
  • Installs, relocates and/or repairs networking infrastructure, including but not limited to, patch panels, equipment racks, hubs, routers, switches, servers, peripherals and related equipment.
  • Provides clean installations with proper wire management and installation techniques.
  • Performs network troubleshooting to isolate and diagnose network problems.
  • Enters commands and observe system functions to verify correct system operation; instruct users in use of equipment, software, network and manuals.
  • Assists in establishing network users, user environment, directories, and security for networks being installed.
  • Keeps abreast of new software, hardware and networking product developments and computer networking/utilization strategies.
  • Upgrades network hardware and software components as required.
  • Assists in the replacement and reconfiguration of defective or inadequate hardware and software packages.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Associate’s Degree (two-year college or technical school) in computer systems technology or five successful years in a technology support specialist position or equivalent. Candidates certified in Compatia A+, Compatia Server+ or Compatia Network+ are preferred.
